I have just enabled Branch protections to protect our Ontology.
However, when I make a simple change and create a proposal, it is auto approved and mergeable without requiring other team members to review
how can i require approval from other people prior to merging?

You are one of two customers who have this feature enabled. Right now, this feature forces every change in your ontology to go through an approval. If you are an editor of that resource, the change gets auto approved. Otherwise, you would have to seek an approval from one editor on that resource.
We are currently working to evolve this feature by allowing for more granularity in who is allowed to approve a change (+ whether you enable “self approvals” or not).
