Hello,
A new department is joining Foundry and I will have a large number of new users on the platform. However, they aren’t approved to view existing projects yet (this will happen over the course of the next months).
I’d like to isolate them from the existing Projects more thoroughly than just not giving them Roles. Which approach would be better?
- Create a new Organization for the new users. Then, mark Projects with this Org as they are approved for the new department.
or
- Create a new Marking that only existing departments have access to and mark every Project. Then, gradually remove these markings from Projects which are approved for the new department.
Hey,
It’s hard to give a definitive answer to your question, as it will depend on your goals. Here are 2 relevant tradeoffs as you navigate the decision:
- What is the ideal situation in the long-term?
If your 2 user populations are meaningfully different and should always be kept separate, then using organizations will be the better option. If the difference is only temporary as they get onboarded but not meaningful in the long-term, then you should not use organizations.
- How important is total coverage of projects?
All projects have organization markings, so by using organizations you would guarantee that all projects have to be “triaged” between either (or both) of your organizations. Whereas with markings, you will not have to review each project to decide whether to apply your new marking or not. In particular, new projects won’t get marked automatically, and so you may not get coverage of everything with this approach.
From what I gather in your message, this sounds like a temporary measure - in which case I would pick markings.
